The 2023 Ford F-Series Super Duty has been unveiled and reveals a truck and looks and feels just like the old one, but with plenty that’s new.
In a market segment sensitive to change, that’s a bold move. Even if it doesn’t give us much to drool over, we at least know the Super Duty is going to deliver what we need from it.
The 2023 Ford F-Series Super Duty was unveiled at the Kentucky Derby in the US.
While it looks and feels exactly the same, Ford has given every element of the Super Duty the update treatment.
Super Duty
You’ll probably first notice the slightly reworked grille. It integrates better into the front and mimics the lines of the lower grille and hood.
It also works well with the light bar that borders each side.
The profile looks very similar to the current model, with simple body panels with minimal detailing and long wheels base.
You may not notice at first, but the wheels and wheel arches are now larger. There is also a pair of vents behind the front wheels to help with aero.
At the back, the step we saw last time remains, as does the design, aside from a couple of minor touches. The tailgate does get a camera and reversing sensors that work whether the tailgate it up or down.
Inside, the 2023 Ford F-Series Super Duty looks very similar to the current model and that’s a good thing.
There is a new steering wheel and touchscreen and the option for a 12” digital instrument cluster, but the rest looks the same even if it isn’t.
There is also the option for 5G connectivity if you need it with over the air (OTA) update capability.
All Super Duty will get some form of the Ford CoPilot 360 suite. Exactly what features on what trims have yet to be announced.
Under the hood
Under the hood of the 2023 Ford F-Series Super Duty, there are a couple of changes to the engines. You now have the option of two gas and two diesel engines.
There’s a 6.8 litre gas V8, a 7.3 litre gas V8, a 6.7 litre diesel V8 and an upgraded version of the same diesel with uprated turbo and engine internals for more power.
Ford has yet to release power details for the engines.
All four motors will use the TorqShift 10-speed automatic transmission and AWD will be standard on all trims XLT and above.
Other new touches for the Super Duty
There’s a new onboard scale system that lets you know how much you’re carrying or hauling.
There’s also a new heads up display that can show that rear camera we mentioned earlier.
Trailer Navigation can help plot a route ideal for trailers and there’s a 2.0-kilowatt onboard generator to help power tools or appliances at remote work sites.
The 2023 Ford F-Series Super Duty is expected in ‘early 2023’ according to the release. The exact timing is apparently down to supply chain issues, like with most other manufacturers.
