How to Sell Your Car Without a UVIP in Ontario

The Used Vehicle Information Package (UVIP), is mandatory for private car sales in Ontario. While a good thing for the most part, it’s an extra hassle on top of the Safety Certificate you need to provide as well.

 

Sell your car to a dealership and you can ignore needing a UVIP as we’ll take care of all the paperwork for you.

Used Vehicle Information Package (UVIP)

 

 

The Used Vehicle Information Package (UVIP) is a standard declaration outlining your vehicle’s make, model, year, colour, body type, engine type and registration history.

 

It’s a simple online form but is an extra piece of admin that is legally binding and subject to section 205 of the Highway Traffic Act.

 

The UVIP costs $20 right now and the form takes 10-20 minutes to complete.

 

The Safety Certificate

 

 

The Safety Certificate is another mandatory piece of paperwork you need for a private vehicle sale.

 

You can sell your car ‘as is’ but you won’t get as much interest when you advertise it.

 

This is a little more onerous as you need to make an appointment at your closest Motor Vehicle Inspection Station and have your car inspected.

 

This costs more than $20 and each station will charge different rates. It also takes longer but can often be done while you wait.

 

These two pieces of paperwork are great in theory. Designed to provide the new owner with everything they need to know about the vehicle and assurance that it has been inspected for safety.

 

The other paperwork required in private car sales include a signed bill of sale and an application of transfer but both of these are very straightforward.

 

Selling Your Car to a Dealership

While neither the UVIP or Safety Certificate are a showstopper, they are an extra hurdle in the way of a private sale.

 

If you’re in a hurry, don’t want to bother with the paperwork or would prefer to handle the transaction from the comfort of a showroom, you won't be needing a UVIP when you sell your car to a dealership.
